Nicholas G. M. Ross has been a member of the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra since 1990. His
experience as a violinist includes serving as Principal Second Violinist with the Utica Symphony
Orchestra, as well as section positions with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the Binghamton
Philharmonic, Arizona Opera and the Albany Symphony. In addition to his symphonic experience, Ross
has performed with many notable artists including Wynton Marsalis, Natalie Cole, Olivia Newton-John,
Bobby Vinton, and Frank Sinatra Jr., as well as Broadway touring productions of The Producers, Annie
Get Your Gun, and Peter Pan.
Ross received performance degrees from Ithaca College and Syracuse University. After completing his master's degree, Ross joined the Syracuse University faculty as an Affiliate Artist teaching private violin and string pedagogy. In pursuit of his interest in conducting, Ross was the first recipient of the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from Arizona State University in 2003. Since then, he has been on the faculty at Hunter College in New York City, and is currently the Director of Orchestras at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
Demonstrating his affinity for the operatic stage, Ross served as an Associate Conductor with the New York City Opera Company for the 2007-2008 season, and served as an Assistant Conductor with the Glimmerglass Opera Company for three seasons from 2005-2007. In December 2007, a fiftieth anniversary performance of Bernstein's masterpiece West Side Story featured Ross as Music Director and Conductor for a collaborative production with John Jay and Ohio Wesleyan Colleges on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Additional conducting posts include Music Director and Conductor of the Hunter Symphony in New York City, Conducting Assistant with the Phoenix Symphony, Cover Conductor for the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Onondaga Civic Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Most recently, Ross appeared as guest conductor with the Valdosta Symphony in Georgia. This past summer Ross conducted the inaugural concert for the Art of Orchestra Festival in New York City. Additional guest conducting appearances include performances with the Harbin Symphony Orchestra in Harbin, China, the Arizona State University Lyric Opera Theater, the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra in Canandaigua, New York, the Society of Composers Festival in Tempe, Arizona, and the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra.
