David Saltzman has been the Principal Tuba player
of the Toledo Symphony and the Tuba/Euphonium
instructor at Bowling Green State University since
2007. He is also the director of the Bowling Green
State University Tuba/Euphonium ensemble. Most
recently, David has joined the Glimmerglass Opera
Festival in Oneonta, NY as their Principal Tuba player
during their summer series.
Prior to these appointments, David was the Principal
Tuba player for the Honolulu Symphony and the
Honolulu Brass Quintet (1997 - 2007). He was also
the Tuba/Euphonium instructor at the University of
Hawaii, Manoa campus and the founder and director
of the University of Hawaii's Tuba/Euphonium
ensemble.
David has performed with several orchestras throughout the United States and Canada, including: the
Cleveland Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Pittsburgh
Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Windsor
Symphony. He can be heard playing second tuba on the Pittsburgh Symphony's recordings of Symphony
Fantastique and Eine Alpensinfonie conducted by Marek Janowski.
David was the winner of the Colonial Euphonium Tuba Quartet's first Tuba Solo Competition in Albany,
New York in 1996. An active soloist, David performed as a featured soloist at the British Tuba Euphonium
Convention in Birmingham, England as well as the International Women's Brass Conference held in 1997
in St. Louis, Missouri. He has also participated as a guest soloist during ITEC 2008 in Cincinnati, Ohio
and ITEC 2010 in Tucson, Arizona. David also performs numerous solo recitals at schools and
Universities around the country. In 2010, David performed the John Williams Concerto for Tuba with the
Toledo Symphony Orchestra as part of the orchestra's Key Bank Pops series.
David is proud to have studied with Harvey Phillips, Daniel Perantoni, Fritz Kaenzig, Toby Hanks and
David Fedderly. He lives at home in Toledo, Ohio with his wife, three children, and toy poodle.
